Giving Back

My 2011 New Year’s Resolution for my business was to somehow contribute towards an organization that helps children in need.  I am thrilled to announce that I now have the privilege of being the official D.C. Wednesday’s Child photographer.

In April, a fellow photographer – the incredibly giving Joan Brady, who has worked with NBC4′s Wednesday’s Child for many years, asked me to fill in for her with the Wednesday’s Child program while she was away for a few months.  Then recently, due to exciting new opportunities on her front, Joan passed the torch to me as the official D.C. Wednesday’s Child photographer.

From NBC Washington’s website:  “For more than 20 years, Wednesday’s Child has been changing the lives of children in foster care. Sponsored by the Freddie Mac Foundation, the children are featured Wednesdays during News4 at 5 p.m., Thursdays on News4 Midday at 11 a.m., and Sundays on News4 Today at 9 a.m.  More than 700 children have found permanent loving families after being featured on Wednesday’s Child. For information, please call 1-88-TO-ADOPT-ME.”

A child in foster care is highlighted on the program each week.  The child meets with NBC4 anchor Barbara Harrison and together, they participate in an activity that the child enjoys.  The program provides an additional means of recruiting a loving, stable family for each child.  I truly am honored to be a part of it.  The children I’ve met through this program impress and amaze me for so many reasons – their positive attitudes, their resilience, the smiles on their faces, etc.  My small role in all of this is to photograph the activity, take a few group shots, and a headshot of the child.  Not only can the child’s social worker use the images for recruitment purposes, but the child walks away with prints to remember the day by.  Please take the time to watch NBC Washington’s Wednesday’s Child videos online, or tune in to NBC4 (Wednesdays at 5p.m., Thursdays at 11a.m., or Sundays at 9a.m.) to watch this week’s featured child.  YOU could be the one to provide a permanent, loving home to one of the (very deserving) children featured on the program each week!
